Water Resources Director

The City of Olympia Public Works Department divisions include Engineering, General Services, Waste Resources, Transportation, Drinking Water Utility, and Water Resources (made up of the Storm & Surface Water Utility and Wastewater Utility). The Water Resources division provides wastewater collection, and storm and surface water services. Utility activities include operation and maintenance of lift stations, pipes, ponds, and treatment facility infrastructure, long-term planning, infrastructure analysis, capital facility development, and technical assistance and restoration activities to protect and improve water quality and aquatic habitats. The division functions with 36 FTEs on a budget of $32 million.
Under the general direction of the Public Works Director, the Water Resources Director will plan, organize, supervise, and direct all activities of the Wastewater and Storm & Surface Water Utilities. The new director will lead the planning, design, and operation/maintenance of the two utilities consistent with state and federal regulations, as well as the vision and direction contained in the city’s Comprehensive Plan, Wastewater Management Plan, and Storm & Surface Water Management Plan.
The ideal candidate will have graduated from an accredited college or university with a four-year degree in Public Administration, Planning, Engineering, or other fields closely related to Water Resources, and have four years of progressively responsible experience in the management of projects, programs, and activities, including at least two years of supervisory experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Experience with a municipality or other public sector experience is preferred.
